It’s been pretty cold for us here in “sunny” Southern California - but with this major storm we’re enjoying every sip of hot coffee and hot cocoa that we can. Hot chocolate is typically filled with lots of sugar. In a kids hot chocolate at Starbucks there 18 grams of sugar. In a grande there are 37 grams of sugar. Not only is this an ungodly amount of sugar but the ingredients list is pretty crappy: “MILK, MOCHA SAUCE [WATER, SUGAR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, NATURAL FLAVOR], WHIPPED CREAM [CREAM (CREAM, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CARAGEENAN), VANILLA SYRUP (SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVORS, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID)]” I bet there is beaver butthole vanilla in it too… hmm.
Let’s face it - no one should be drinking that crap - especially when you can EASILY make it at home. I get that adding bone broth might be kind of OUT THERE for some people but it really adds a richness without adding all kinds of carbs, calories or sugar.
My recipe below is super low carb and keto-friendly. It’s high protein and dairy free and because bone broth is so good for you, you’re adding in lots of minerals that support the immune system and has healing compounds like collagen, glutamine, glycine and proline. The collagen in bone broth also promotes gut health! It heals your gut lining and reduces inflammation in your intestines! It can also improve your joint health, reduce cellulite and promote healthy skin. Keeping your gut healthy is important year-round but especially during cold and flu season 70-80% of immune cells are in your gut! A healthy gut = a stronger immune system.
RECIPE:
1 cup kettle & fire beef bone broth
1/4 cup coconut cream
2 scoops collagen peptides
1 1/2 Tablespoon cocoa powder
1/2 Tablespoon vanilla
1 Tablespoon vanilla stevia syrup (or 1-2 Tablespoons maple syrup or honey)
Heat bone broth and coconut cream in a sauce pan. Once it starts simmering, turn heat down and add in cocoa powder, vanilla and sweetener. Stir. Add collagen (optional). Pour into a mug and top with frothed creamer, whipped cream or marshmallows.
