The temperatures are finally rising. It’s time for fun in the sun and lots of outdoor activities with the family. Hopefully you’re staying hydrated and drinking enough water… but is water really enough? Have you heard of electrolytes? Do you know what they are?
Electrolytes are minerals that play a vital role in maintaining the balance of fluids in our bodies. They play important roles in helping us maintain proper hydration, nerve function, muscle contractions and pH balance. They can also help regulate the flow of water in and out of our cells.
Hydration is super important for optimal health. It’s no secret that most people in America don’t eat well, so there’s a really great chance (unfortunately) that they also aren’t drinking enough water. If you’re thirsty, then you’re already a bit dehydrated. The best thing to do is to drink enough water throughout the day rather than wait until you become thirsty. Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness and serious things like seizures, UTI’s, kidney issues and much worse.
Electrolytes can combat dehydration: when we sweat, our body’s natural electrolytes deplete. Replenishing our electrolytes helps restore the necessary balance and prevents dehydration. Whether you’re working out, working in the yard, at the beach or even if you’ve lost fluids in your body from diarrhea or throwing up, you need to replenish. Most people turn to Gatorade or Pedialyte because they are conventional products that even athletes and doctors promote, but a problem with them is the high amounts of sugar and artificial food coloring.
Electrolytes, particularly calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are essential for proper muscle function. They help regulate muscle contractions, prevent cramps, and support optimal muscle performance. When we take care of our body and replenish our electrolytes, we’re supporting our overall health and wellness. A good balance of electrolytes can also help with promoting quality energy, brain function and our physical performance.
How do we replenish our electrolytes? I’m so glad you asked.
There are different ways to do this and one of the ways is making sure you are consuming foods that are rich in electrolytes like spinach, banana, coconut, and obviously plenty of water. It’s important to note that the quality of water that you drink truly matters that’s why we have and love our Aqua Tru under the sink water filter (we previously had a countertop water filter from the same company, but have since chosen to go with the under the sink option to save counter space).
You can choose a high quality electrolyte powder which can be added to water. It’s quick, convenient and tastes delicious, too. I really like LMNT’s electrolytes. My favorite flavors are: Orange Salt, Raspberry Salt and Grapefruit Salt … but the Chocolate Salt has been a favorite made with hot water lately. Think of it like a salted hot chocolate, and with a splash of frothed almond milk. Oh my lanta! It tastes so gourmet! Try them with THIS LINK and if you order a box you get a free bonus sample pack. It’s a great way to try other flavors.
I drink electrolytes everyday. They contain essential minerals that help with our body’s overall hydration and pH balance. I typically drink it in the afternoon or after I’ve been out in the sunshine running around chasing my kiddo. I travel with them, too. Remember that they can help with rehydration if you’ve had a sudden loss in fluids (diarrhea or vomiting) and are just great to keep on hand when you travel.
Happy summer! Stay hydrated, friends!
