What Everyone Is Getting Wrong About Apeel's Chemical Coating on Produce + Why They Are Getting Fact-Checked
When you understand what's going on Bill Gates isn't the ONLY problem
In case you missed the news, there’s a new chemical coating on your produce thanks to investors like The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Oprah and Katy Perry. It wont wash off and it’s even being used on organic produce. The coating is called Apeel and they are being a bit vague about everything… we know that it’s made from mono- and diglycerides which are “the go-to replacement for deadly trans fats and a food industry staple that helps keep oil and fat from separating. This additive is a byproduct of oil processing, including partially hydrogenated canola and soybean oils. This additive is a byproduct of oil processing which contains artificial trans fat – a danger food ingredient known to cause coronary heart disease and linked to 50,000 fatal heart attacks a year.”
Apeel is really not being forthright about the labeling or the sourced ingredients. Yes they are saying it’s plant derived but what plants? What are those plants treated or sprayed with? You can read more about Apeel in my previous post that has been read and shared by thousands (thanks, by the way) but in this post let’s talk about what everyone is getting wrong about Apeel — yes some of what you are about to read might sound like I’m defending Apeel and their practices but we have to be 100% honest and factual which some are not when sharing and critiquing the company.
Why are they being so secretive about their ingredients? If they claim they are so safe why aren’t they being upfront about everything so that we as consumers can make the best decision for our families?
Thousands of you have shared my post but are telling me that you’re getting censored and fact checked because of your commentary… but I’ve been looking into this and why it’s happening and there’s one really big misunderstanding about Apeel. Also, Apeel needs to start addressing these common questions that so many are leaving on my posts as well as their own social media accounts and people are starting to take notice of the crickets. It’s never a good sign when a company is being vague about what’s in their product or how it’s made. Proprietary information is understandable but this is dealing with people’s health and wellness. Let’s talk about this…
If you want to actually fight this then you have to read this carefully…
The number one thing so many are getting wrong is this SAFTEY DATA SHEET that is going around. I saw it. I read it carefully and it was actually one of the first things I looked into. It didn’t make sense at first because it didn’t mention anything about produce but after studying it more and more there’s a reason why it’s being shared and a very important reason why it’s being fact checked. The safety data sheet is for a product called APEEL by a company called EVANS VANODINE (established 1919) which is completely different than the APEEL SCIENCES that is spraying crap on your produce.
I’m going to say that again… this data sheet that says APEEL is causing eye damage, skin irritation and other issues is not for the Apeel chemical coating your produce to make it last longer. Look at the data sheet and you will see that it says it’s for a HARD SURFACE CLEANER and a company called Evans Vanodine.
If you are sharing that safety data sheet around and getting fact checked then I’m okay with that because you’re 100% sharing misinformation and this will not help our case when it comes to trying to fight this other Apeel coating on our produce. We will lose credibility by sharing this information. This is the only thing I will every say in favor of Apeel Sciences …. However we also don’t know what THEIR product actually does or if it causes any harm to your eyes or skin OR your body after eating it on produce. We just don’t know because they aren’t telling us much.
In other words, we can’t say that it does cause those irritants but we also can’t really say it doesn’t only because we know NOTHING.
Please stop sharing that safety data sheet going around that looks like this because it’s not helping our case. If you’ve posted about it, go delete it and share THIS LINK instead.
Phew… that was a lot to unload but there’s more.
You wanted to know the following and I wish I had all the answers but once again Apeel isn’t disclosing much. The USDA, The WHO (not the band ✌🏽) and Health Canada say it’s safe. Haha that made me laugh and throw up in my mouth. The FDA also allows so many chemicals into our food that other countries ban so I really don’t give a crap that they say Apeel is safe. Their track record doesn’t hold much weight.
Interestingly enough I’ve seen a few comments saying that those with soy allergies have long known about Apeel. My sarcastic and joke of a response has been “why didn’t you tell the rest of us!” HA! I’m soy free but not allergic. I can’t even believe that we would have to worry about soy on apples and produce in general
.If you said that you will just buy organic then you didn’t read the whole post… if you look at their FAQs you will see that it CAN be sprayed on organic produce as well. So just buying organic doesn’t mean much unfortunately. Organic should mean untouched and natural. It should be untreated. The reason why we buy organic is because we want our produce without chemicals, pesticides or artificial agents. Regardless of Apeel’s chemical coating being plant derived how do we know what plants it’s derived from and what those plants were treated with. We’ll never know.
Some of you commented wanting to know if it goes through the peel to the inner fruit or veggie. Well, they are coating it on produce where you’d eat the peel: cucumbers and apples and lemons (lemon rind/zest) so it doesn’t really mater if it doesn’t go to the inside if you also want to eat the outside. The reality is… we don’t know. We don’t know how far it penetrates to the inside of the produce.
You can’t wash this crap off or soak it off or pray it away. I don’t care how fancy your produce wash is or how clean your water filter is. They state that it cannot be scrubbed off.
In response to anyone that says “everything is a chemical,” I give you permission to vomit all over them with your words and knowledge about what this really means. When people ask if it’s made of chemicals they mean synthetic or harmful chemicals not water (which is technically a chemical). This is the lamest, dumbest response from those who are pro-toxins and pro-pesticides in our food. And, more than likely those same people don’t lead a healthy-conscious lifestyle, don’t read ingredients and could care less about organic, organic farming, PFAS, BPA, BPS, phlalates and they also probably touch receipts, too. (Yeah those are super toxic and you can read why the caption on this video).
Lastly - your produce may or may not be labeled with a sticker saying “Apeel” on it. It could have a sticker then you know for sure but some produce may not disclose it — we don’t know because once again they aren’t telling us much. But they are telling us some of the brands using this on their produce. SOME of the produce companies using Apeel are Topline, Index Fresh, Calve, Del Monte, West Park, Horton Fruit Co, Del Ray Avocado, Natures Pride and more. The following stores may also carry produce treated with Apeel: Costco, Trader Joes, Gelsons, Ralphs, Sprouts, Vons, Walmart, Whole Foods, Kroger, Harps Foods, Wakefern brand stores including Price Right, Fairway Market, Target, Bristol Farms and more. There is more listed on the Apeel website so study it and save a list to your phone of produce companies and stores that MIGHT have Apeel.
A lot of people are jumping on this bandwagon of going after Apeel because of their ties to Bill Gates. Understandably so (I‘m not a fan). But at the same time many of those same people are spending money on crappy food, fast food, sodas, junk and artificial foods. There’s cognitive dissonance here. The main issue isn’t Bill Gates (though he’s a close second problem with this) — it’s what they are coating our produce with that we don’t want to and shouldn’t want to ingest. The Bill Gates issue is more “sus” as the cool kids say (suspicious) because of his agenda and belief system which doesn’t align with those of us who are health conscious and want to live a clean, natural, organic lifestyle. I don’t trust the guy nor agree with anything he says. We can add in all kinds of other things about Bill Gates that we want but when it comes to health… he’s not the guy. He wants us to eat LAB-GROWN MEAT! He’s out of his mind. If you really want to fight Bill Gates then purchase local, organic, grass fed meats which is actually better for the environment AND start buying organic everything … just nothing treated with APEEL.
What can we do about this?
Stop sharing misinformation (the safety data sheet for the other Apeel product which has nothing to do with this) and start educating yourself on this subject matter. You need to be armed with the truth. We are stronger together when we are all on the same page and are knowledgeable on the subject matter.
Start learning about your food and where it comes from and how it’s made. Look at the ingredients you are consuming and the food you are spending your money on. If you care about your health you will take this part seriously.
Be consistent. Don’t just talk the talk and say that Apeel is bad all over social media and that you don’t wan’t to eat it but honestly and intentionally go out of your way to NOT purchase produce treated with Apeel. Stop giving them your dollars. Be vocal about this to your store managers and produce managers as well as farmers markets!
